Services:

Competent advice

  • Appointment as a Competent Advisor is a cost effective solution providing the client with access to advice and a full range of services throughout the year (to an agreed time limit).  This could include an annual compliance audit.
  • As an alternative to the above appointed competent person arrangement, ad hoc competent advice can be provided as and when specific requirements arise.

Case Study: Appointed as a Competent Advisor for a Biopharmaceutical Company on an annual contract to provide support for up to 12 days per year. Responded to queries via email and phone, and visited site regularly to discuss issues and implement solutions. Provided a full range of services to ensure policies and procedures were up to date, risk assessments were in place and employees were trained. Provided competent advice at safety committee meetings. Enabled the client to be confident that they were complying with legislation and following best practice, confirmed by an HSE inspection. Provided a quarterly newsletter keeping the client up to date with current legislation and best practice.

 

Risk Assessment

Case Study: Performed a workplace process risk assessment in a clean room laboratory – improvements were recommended to minimise risks from manual handling, slips and ergonomics.

Case Study: Performed a fire risk assessment for an office and laboratory facility in a multi-occupancy building. Produced prioritised recommendations to improve the management of maintenance and chemical storage provisions.

Case Study: Performed individual computer workstation assessments for an office based organisation and recommended simple and pragmatic solutions in order to minimise employee ill health.

 

Control of Hazardous Substances

Specialist advice on:

  • COSHH (chemical and biological agents): risk assessment, control measures (including ventilation systems) and documentation.
  • Dangerous Substances Regulations: Risk assessment and documentation.
  • Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) Regulations.

Case Study: Devised a pragmatic COSHH (chemical and biological) assessment system for a laboratory based company.

Occupational Health

Maxwell Safety has formed an alliance with a leading local occupational health organisation. We work together to devise and deliver the most appropriate occupational health services to ensure employee health and compliance with relevant legislation.  

  • Pre-employment screening and (statutory) health surveillance.
  • Return-to-work health assessments.
  • Vaccinations.

Case Study: Through an H&S consultant and occupational nurse partnership, carried out health- and workplace-risk assessments to assist an employee to return to work following diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis,  

 

Policy, Procedures and Management systems

  • Provision of a full range of health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Implementation of formal H&S management systems (e.g. BS OHSAS 18001).

Case Study: For a laboratory service provider, implemented a tailored H&S management system including policy documentation and detailed procedures. Delivered employee training to improve awareness and understanding of health and safety policy.

 

Auditing and Workplace Inspections

  • Auditing and workplace inspections - as an initial status review, to assess regulatory compliance or to measure progress on a regular basis (e.g. annual).

Case Study: For a laboratory technology manufacturer, performed a full audit of H&S management documentation against legislative requirements and best practice; and a physical site inspection to ensure policy was adopted in practice. Produced a clear concise prioritised plan for corrective action.

Case Study: For a antibody supplier, performed a full audit of safety management systems, followed up by an in-depth horizontal audit of one aspect of the company’s commercial business, from horizon scanning to despatch of product to ensure that this operation was fully integrated and safety inclusive .

Relocation and Decommissioning of R&D Facilities

  • Design issues and advice on the relocation of equipment/hazardous substances.
  • Decommissioning/decontamination of facilities and due diligence.

Case Study: Health and safety advisor for a successful design and relocation project for a 90,000 sq ft state of the art R&D facility. Project Manager for the successful decommissioning of a 30,000 sq ft R&D facility.

Case Study: Provided advice to a global technology research company on relocation from their laboratory premises. Produced a 'due diligence' facility vacation report, which included surface chemical contamination monitoring and providing advice on safe cleaning.
