Profile

Maxwell Safety was formed in 2005 with the aim of providing practical, cost effective health and safety solutions for small and medium enterprises.  Our clients are currently mainly within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, 'hi-technology', office-based and light manufacturing sectors located in the South East of England, and the client base is growing rapidly. The company has very close links with ERBI and provides health and safety training for its members ("H&S Representatives" and "Laboratory Safety").

Our H&S consultants are Chartered Health and Safety Practitioners, with extensive experience in delivering pragmatic health and safety solutions and dynamic training. We also employ experienced professional consultants, with specific expertise in manual handling, food hygiene and fire safety.

Dr Chris Maxwell, Managing Director

The Managing Director is Dr Chris Maxwell who is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner holding the NEBOSH Diploma and a PhD in Chemistry from Oxford University.
He has eight years of H&S Management experience; five years in the pharmaceutical industry and three years as a consultant.

Chris is recognised for providing stimulating and interactive training.  He has also been a specialist associate trainer for Safety Solutions UK Ltd (Hazardous agents unit for the NEBOSH level 4 Diploma).

Prior to establishing Maxwell Safety, Chris was H&S Manager for Cambridge Antibody Technology (now MedImmune) and prior to that Millennium Pharmaceuticals; in both positions he was recognised for developing a pragmatic health and safety culture.

During Chris' time at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, he was a key member of the design and relocation teams for two research facilities (30,000 sq. ft and 90,000 sq. ft) and the Project Manager for the safe decommissioning of three facilities (total 135,000 sq. ft), two for handover to the landlord and one for demolition.

Chris is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Environment, Health and Safety Committee.

Chris' other interests include coaching and participating in athletics and cycling (when his twin boys allow!).

Sara Cooper, Associate Principal Consultant

Educated originally at Oxford, and with a research degree in a biological subject, Sara worked for 15 years in roles mainly associated with the food industry.  After an initial start in the commercial sector, she worked for a research organisation, ultimately heading up a chemistry laboratory specialising in reference analysis and in crisis management.  She has worked on expert committees in the UK and for the EC, and for international clients setting up specialist facilities.  Some of the more unusual projects have included the design and operation of safety-critical laboratories handling highly toxic contaminants and containment for biological, chemical and radiological hazards.  Stimulated by the safety dimension to these projects, she made a deliberate career change.  She has worked as a safety professional now for over 18 years, and particularly enjoys developing working relationships which are influential, effective and promote safety.  She was the Director of Health and Safety at the University of Cambridge for almost 8 years and found the academic hot-house environment both an intellectual and practical challenge. This stands her in good stead now as a safety consultant specialising in executive, director and management training in the commercial sector where persuasive skills are vital in achieving sustained change. Sara also trained as a safety auditor and would be pleased to explore the benefits of safety auditing tailored to your company needs. Sara is a Member of the Royal Society’s Environment, Health and Safety Committee, and of IOSH’s Technical Committee.

In her precious spare time you are most likely to find Sara engaged in the gentler battle of nurturing her garden.
